Another Liquor Store at 4555 W. Coast Highway? Not Again.

For years, Newport Beach residents have fought to protect our coastal neighborhoods from nuisance businesses that threaten safety, peace, and quality of life. Now, we’re facing that fight again.

A company called Coastal Corner Inc. is seeking a new license to sell alcohol at 4555 W. Coast Highway — the same property that once housed Circle K, a store shut down after multiple violations for selling alcohol to minors and creating years of public-safety problems.

This isn’t about one store. It’s about preserving the character, safety, and values that define Newport Beach.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The Wrong Location.
This property sits in an area already classified by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) as over-concentrated with liquor licenses — five already exist where only two are legally allowed.

The Law Is Clear.
Under California Business & Professions Code Sections 23958 and 23958.4, the ABC must deny licenses that would add to an over-concentration unless “public convenience or necessity” is proven. Nothing about another liquor outlet at this site serves the public good.

A History of Problems.
The former Circle K repeatedly violated state law by selling to minors and became a magnet for loitering, public intoxication, and late-night disturbances. Those same conditions still exist — only the name would change.

The Community Has Spoken.
Since 2022, Newport residents have successfully opposed three previous attempts to reopen this site as a liquor retailer. Each time, neighbors organized, spoke up, and won.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

If this license is approved, it sets a dangerous precedent — telling every developer and corporate operator that our neighborhoods are open for exploitation. This isn’t progress. It’s a step backward for public safety, local control, and community pride.
